OK So I haven’t posted in a while because of this

It’s December 24th and I’ve just realised that I havent made a post since the middle of September…

I’ve been pretty busy with a few freelance jobs and have also started to work on a tool for administering MySQL servers called MySQL Tools (inventive name I know).

You can track its progress here www.github.com/partydroid/MySQL-Tools

Work over the last month has been slow… There’s about 6 things on my to-do list but you can still try it out!

Do bad backlinks cripple your SEO?

Running any website isn’t really rocket science nowadays. But writing fresh content and driving visitors to any new website can be an absolute pain. Having set up many sites from scratch  before, without any marketing budget whatsoever, I can appreciate how slow it can be to get things rolling and get at least 20 visitors per day.

I notice a variety of site that offer to provide backlinks on sites up to PR10, but by containing a lot of spam posts and links to websites without any decent content, are the site that offering the backlinks reducing their credibility?  Just a thought….

Facebook Timelines

Last night Facebook announced Timeline, a new way of showing everything that has happened on Facebook in a clean, modern, sleek way.

Seems as most of the recent  changes to Facebook have been quite badly presented and obnoxious, this recent addition has definitely given a new niche to Facebook.

Facebook say that Timeline feature will be launched on the 30th September 2011. However the preview is available for developers who use the open graph API.  I didn’t realise that was what qualified me to see this prerelease beta, but then I found this guide at tech crunch. http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/22/how-to-enable-facebook-timeline/

To enable the Timelines feature: Login on Facebook, add the facebook developer app (http://developers.facebook.com), create a new app (you don’t have to fill much of this out), on the app’s page look for “Open Graph” and then click the link that says “Get started using open graph”

After that just create a new action like “visit” a “website” or “cook” a “toastie” – it won’t be public.

After 10 minutes or so, you should see a link on your Facebook homepage asking you to join the beta.

Pagerank!

Yay. The estimated Pagerank for my blog has increased from 0 to 1 since starting my blog. Good news for getting more traffic! Its a reflection on how many websites are pointing to mine and may increase my position in search engine rankings.

New audio interface

Ok. So I bought a new audio interface to record a few songs with. It’s not the best money can buy but I got it at a steal price on ebay. I bought a PreSonus FirePod.  Its got 8 nice preamps + 2 aux ins on the back. I used to own a Motu 8pre, it cost around £100 more and didn’t have the 10 outs that the Motu had.

There’s a pic of it in my old HiFi cabinet next to my computers.

Upgrade!

So, I thought I’d splash some cash and get an upgrade for my computer today. 4Gb of RAM just isn’t quite enough for me now.  In my old rig, I had 2 ATI HD5870 cards in crossfire, the fan broke on one of them and XFXForce were really happy to RMA it. I even got an upgrade to a HD6870.  The problem was that although the cards could run together (and drive my screens) I could only really get any performance off of one of my cards.  So, seems as I was buying a tonne of RAM, I thought I’d splash out for another ATI HD6870 too.

And here we have the finished product.

OnLive. First thoughts

OnLive is announced to reach the UK on 22nd September 2011.  Although, outright, I can’t say that I’d advocate it, I will more than certainly be one of the first to play it

So. I remember about 2 years ago, when I first heard of OnLive; my heart sank, thinking this would be another blow for the gaming industry.  I thought the idea was very novel, very unique and definitely a leap forwards in terms of technology, but a big step back in terms of gaming experience.
